Hi! I’ve been reading your tumblr for a while and really love what you are doing. My co-tumbler at Spud City and I were having a conversation about how shocking it was that people frequently react the way they do when they are called out for racist actions, either calling YOU racist for pointing it out, or saying they are “honoring Native American culture” (singular). Something she pointed out, which I hadn’t seen you talk about yet, is what the use of the word “honor”, and the messed up power dynamic that implies. To “honor” something by appropriating it, displays an inherent sense of superiority. Merely by slapping on some warpaint and donning a Hot Topic feathered headdress, you are somehow elevating “Native American culture” instead of insulting a bunch of people.
“No really, it is a great honor to see you dressed up in a racist caricature of our sacred attire! Thank you!” —Nobody
